RELEASE: WOMEN OF FIRE INC. DONATES
AGRICULTURAL SUPPLIES
TO GRAND BASSA ORGANIZATION
Buchanan, Grand Bassa County. March 11,2011 – Today in Grand Bassa County, an organization of young Liberian Women, known as the Women of Fire, Inc. donated several agricultural items and bags of rice to The Community Initiative Empowerment for Transparency, a local grass-roots organization in Grand Bassa County, with the aim of helping them to become self-sufficient.
Items donated included wheelbarrows, cutlasses, shovels, several bags of rice and other agricultural supplies valued at over two thousand United States Dollars. WOF became aware of the organization late last year and felt moved to contribute to their plight. “We think it is important for us as Liberians to empower our fellow Liberians and in doing so, help them to become self-sufficient so they can in turn not only help themselves, but others as well’, stated their representative. The items were presented on behalf of the Women of Fire, by Ms. Ethel V. Knuckles, a founding and board member of the Women of Fire, an Atlanta-based organization which has been in existence since 2002.
The Community Initiative Empowerment for Transparency, a Buchanan-based organization contacted the Women of Fire requesting agricultural supplies to help with their ongoing farming project. The agricultural organization consists of over 25 farmers and they currently are growing pepper. cabbage, cassava, and other vegetables. The crops are for sale at local Buchanan markets and serves as a means for these farmers to support their families.
The Women of Fire representative stressed that rather than a hand-out, this donation was regarded as a hand-up, in other words a helping hand up to assist fellow Liberians who were already in the process of creating an opportunity for themselves within their community through the work of their own hands. Ms. Knuckles implored them to continue their hard work and congratulated them on beginning the initiative themselves, rather than waiting on handouts and making it thus far.
The Women of Fire was founded in 2002 in Atlanta, GA and the membership of this sisterhood consists of young Liberian women who felt a need to join efforts to make a collective impact at home and in Diaspora. As young Liberians whose lives were uprooted by the civil crisis, the members came together almost 9 years with the idea to turn something negative into something positive, by pooling their resources to promote Liberia and Liberia. Since then, WOF has established an annual scholarship program in Liberia that has already benefitted over 40 students, sponsors a Big-Sister Small-Sister Mentorship Program in Atlanta Georgia, and hosts the popular annual Taste of Liberia Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, in celebration of Liberian culture and heritage. The 9th Annual Taste of Liberia will be held this summer and the organization will also host their 2nd Women's Empowerment Dinner & Awards Ceremony next month in Atlanta featuring Designer Kortu Momolu and honoring Ms. Momolu, and Monrovia Acting City Mayor, Mayor Broh, among others.
The Women of FIRE, Inc. is organized exclusively for charitable purposes within the meaning of Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 (U.S.A.) and is legally recognized as such. FIRE’s primary purpose is to offer assistance to grassroots entities serving the underprivileged in Liberia.
